Good stuff. Being married makes you realise how much of tv is made by/ for /about young single people and how rarely you get to see even simplistic takes on long term married life. Just on the US office generally it’s funny to me, given their respective reputations, how much better it is than the UK version although obviously they became very different programmes. I think it’s a residual hangover of the long vanished time when British tv was considered the best around
Yeah I was trying to think of long-running TV shows that have done a comparably realistic and well-observed marriage storyline without "cheating", as it were, by bringing in something like adultery or a gambling addiction or what have you. Admittedly I don't watch a huge amount of contemporary TV but it's surprisingly hard ("that's what she said!" - Michael Scott).
Not aware of any TV shows but here are some films: Noah Baumbach's "While We're Young" and Nicole Holofcener's "You Hurt my Feelings." Both are quite honest about marriage and especially growing into middle age together.

Brilliant! After your analysis I'm seriously considering watching the entire run of The Office.
Definitely worth it. I know I've given spoilers for some of the big Jim-Pam drama but there's a lot more to the show than just their relationship.
